How to avoid or
stop joint pain....
Today's Post: Tuesday, 11-10-2015
Very unfortunately, people
often develop joint pain and osteoarthritis once they get older than 55 or 60
years old.
Then they continue the
lifestyle that caused this and take over the counter pain and anti-inflammatory
drugs that aren’t very effective, have harmful side effects, and even sometimes
make the problem worse.
This reduces their quality
of life and eventually hampers their mobility.
Such people often need canes or walkers to get about at these quite
young ages.
But this can be largely
prevented and even stopped in many cases.
You can be one of the people who can still walk easily and run in your
nineties and over.
Strategically this is
simple.
Stop the causes of it.
Reduce the discomfort and
mobility limitations of what you don’t stop.
And, use the methods that
can limit or reverse the damage.
1. The eating style still of most Americans that
they think is normal and safe is neither.
It produces high chronic inflammation.
That
inflammation CAUSES osteoarthritis and then it makes it more painful.
And, it’s actually more serious
and important to prevent or reverse than that because that same high chronic
inflammation also helps cause:
-- heart disease and
strokes and Alzheimer’s disease and other kinds of mental decline and many
cancers!
2. What to stop eating and eat instead to
reverse this awful situation:
Stop eating cheap oils made
from grains. Stop eating all wheat. Stop eating or cut way back on all other grains.
I learned the details of
this in the book Anti-Cancer. Healthy
people have about the same omega 3 intake as omega 6 oils. Because of the changes to too much omega 6
oils from cheap grains, people who don’t know how to avoid it today have 15 to
30 TIMES too much omega 6 oils and reduced intake of omega 3 oils.
People who eat the foods
that everyone ate until the last 200 years tended to have a balance of the
pro-inflammatory omega 6 oils (and limited inflammation when you are injured is
helpful) and the anti-inflammatory omega 3 oils from animal sources.
Soy oil and canola oil and
corn oil and safflower oil are cheap but very high in omega 6 oils from the
grains and seeds they are made from.
Animals fed cheap soy and
corn instead of their natural foods have that same very high omega 6 oil
content in their fat.
Wheat today has so many
problems in addition to its high omega 6 content no one should eat it. And, you can help minimize your omega 6
intake by not eating other grains or eating 90% less of grains other than wheat
than most people have been doing.
Then you can help reduce
chronic inflammation by eating wild caught fish high in omega 3 oils such as
Alaskan salmon, sardines, herring, and small mackerel. You can take omega 3 oil supplements; and you
can take supplements of the most useful omega 3 DHA.
(Taking DHA plus doing
regular exercise releases the nerve and brain cell growing and repairing
hormone BDNF also!)
Boosting omega 3 intake is
far more effective to lower chronic inflammation if you also stop ALL the foods
that have been giving you over 10 times too much omega 6 intake!
Lastly, there are two
anti-inflammatory foods and the supplements made from them that are botanically
related:
People who eat them or take
them in supplement form have far lower chronic inflammation than people who don’t.
They have other health
benefits and help prevent heart disease and mental decline and cancers.
And, they do NOT have the
side effects of the anti-inflammatory drugs.
They are ginger and
turmeric (and the curcumins turmeric contains.)
What if you eat in a way
where you get what once was the omega 6 intake that was normal for humans for
hundreds of thousands of years and stop all the excessive intake.
What if you boost your
intake of omega 3 oils; and eat and take ginger and turmeric and curcumin?
Simple, you no longer have
high chronic inflammation.
I’ve done it and my HSCRP
readings show it works. (I do each of
these things and have been for a few years now.
My last two readings have been 0.2 and 0.3. If you have readings of 1.0
or higher you run all these disease risks because of it.)
3. Our recent post, Tuesday, 11-3-2015, on how to
avoid age related muscle loss has several methods to do so. If you use them, your body releases growth
hormone which helps repair and regrow the cartilage in your joints AND supports
them with much stronger muscles.
In addition to that, you
can take the supplements glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and the collagen
from grass fed cows in the collagen protein supplement by BulletProof.
4. If you have to get them to stop pain or be
mobile, there are also joint replacements for knees and hips. But you are dramatically less likely to need them
if you do these other things right away.
And, if you do these things
and get the replacements, you will recover far faster and get much better
results.
3 Comments:
More supplements that have tested to help stop joint pain are:
Boron and Boswellia Serrata.
1. I just got the information that taking 3 to 6 mg a day of Boron tested to reduce joint pain compared to placebo in 5/7 of the people taking it!
And, another study found it remove stiffness in the joints that had it
Since taking that much boron has ALSO been tested to improve alertness and make your bones considerably stronger and cut the risk of the aggressive form of prostate cancer by up to 50% it may be well worth taking! Twinlab Supplements provides it in 3 mg capsules.
2. Boswellia Serrata from Frankincense has been found to reduce pain and inflammation AND stiffness in joints. It also may work particularly well when taken with curcumin. The reviews on the Source Naturals website rated it as unusually effective for joint and back pain.
The supplement companies Natures Way, NOW, and Source Naturals each provide it.
(Green lipped mussel has also been tested to help. But it's expensive; some people are allergic to it; the studies showing it worked had people taking it 3 or more times a day and at those dosages there were some people with side effects.
Based on that, you might want to try it after everything else if you still need it after using all the other things here and are not allergic to shellfish.)
I. Two more relevant facts to help you stop joint pain:
a) Silymarin, the active ingredient of milk thistle protects your liver which is very important. I just found out it also cuts joint pain! And, it's a relatively strong effect according to what I just read.
(Because of the heavier drinking of red wine I once did and the beer I drank as a young man, I've long taken 3 capsules a day of Nature's Way standardized Milk Thistle to help my liver recover and stay healthy.
Nice to know it also has been helping me NOT get the joint pain my Dad had at my current age!)
b) When I checked for things that helped with joint pain I found Boswellia Serrata which I covered in my previous comment.
Yesterday, I just found out that it: "Reduces C Reactive Protein — a common inflammation marker — by 24%."
That means it is effective for joint pain and preventing joint damage.
Note that this means it also is significantly heart protective and that it IS at least somewhat cancer protective!
Another set of things that has been tested to reduce joint pain:
Sulfur containing foods -- and supplements except MSM -- work well to decrease join pain and have other health benefits.
Onions and garlic are heart protective because they lower small particle LDL by lowering triglycerides and increasing LDL.
Garlic works as fresh minced garlic and actual tests show that deodorized garlic supplements also work to do this.
(The fresh garlic is likely more effective at also lowering high blood pressure and antiviral and antibiotic effects and has this heart protective effect too. For joint pain consider doing both.)
Onions also work and have been tested to lower joint pain both raw and cooked in part because it is their bioavailable sulfur that does the job.
MSM has sulfur and some research shows it helps a bit. BUT it places serious stress on the liver while these other sulfur providing things do not. And they have other health benefits while MSM does not. When I found this out, I stopped taking it.
The other things also seem more effective.
