WHY extra virgin Olive oil prevents Alzheimer’s disease....

Today's Post: Monday, 10-10-2011

Studies have already found that the use of olive oil and extra virgin olive oil is a key reason for the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

Similarly studies have found that use of olive oil and extra virgin olive oil tends to prevent heart disease and all kinds of mental decline.

And, we’ve already posted on many of the effects of olive oil and extra virgin olive oil that cause these effects.

Today, thanks to meat and poultry and dairy foods from animals fed grain with lots of omega 6 oil instead of their natural diet, most people get close to 8 to 12 TIMES too much omega 6 oil. Worse, due to their being inexpensive, people often buy and eat margarine and oils such as corn and soy that are high in omega 6 oils. And, only some people get enough omega 3 oils. (Most margarines also have hydrogenated oils.)

This way of eating produces high inflammation and helps cause heart disease and reduced blood flow to your brain—all of which contributes to mental decline.

Omega 6 oils also lower your protective HDL cholesterol. So, eating beans and nuts; and wild caught fish; and 100 % grass fed meat; and only the leanest most fat trimmed of meats from grain fed animals -- & NOT often! -- will help solve this problem.

But even bigger help is to replace ALL margarine and oils such as corn and soy that are high in omega 6 oils with extra virgin olive oil. Monosaturated oils, omega 9 oils, do NOT boost inflammation and they do increase your HDL cholesterol that tends to clean your blood vessels and prevent a drop off in circulation.

In addition, extra virgin olive oil has other antioxidants and nutrients that protect your health.

My Real Age email came today with some blockbuster additional news!

They somehow missed that it was important enough to be front page news and it wasn’t even their headline story.

Why?

Recent research has found that a cause of Alzheimer’s disease is a protein that destroys the nerves in your brain called Tau.

EATING EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL -- DIRECTLY PREVENTS TAU PROTEIN FROM DAMAGING YOUR NERVES!

That means eating extra virgin olive oil directly prevents this cause of Alzheimer’s disease from doing so!

“ Researchers have discovered a compound in extra-virgin olive oil that may protect the brain…”

“Alzheimer's disease is associated with a change of tau protein in nerve cells. It clumps together to form snarled, spaghetti-like structures, which choke the life out of neurons, damage synapses, and kill off brain function in areas associated with memory retention one tiny piece at a time.

Think of it like a cell phone carrier with spotty coverage. Your synapses help pass info from one nerve cell to the next so when they're damaged, they can't properly relay messages, which can lead to memory loss, depression, personality changes, and declining cognitive function. It's the equivalent of dropped calls.”

A compound in extra virgin olive oil, “called oleocanthal, alters the structure of the snarls in a way that keeps them from binding to the synapses”

The Real Age report or the research on which it’s based does NOT say that the oleocanthal in extra virgin olive oil also prevents damage to the cells themselves though this change in binding ability may well do that too.

But even if it does not, the stimulation and use of the neurons that avoid being disconnected by synapse damage, likely helps keep them alive and working.

In your body, what you stop using you tend to lose. The oleocanthal in extra virgin olive oil keeps your neurons connected and in use!

Just replacing omega 6 oils, hydrogenated omega 6 oils, and fats from grain fed animals and poultry that are also very high in omega 6 with olive oil protects your brain. That’s because it lowers chronic inflammation and boosts your HDL both of which help maintain good blood flow to your brain.

But now we know that using extra virgin olive oil helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease in an additional and direct way too!

Wow!

Thanks useful info> Vitamin E may also help Alzhiemers see here. http://myhealth-your-health.blogspot.com/search?q=coffee

I'd not heard that mega doses of vitamin E may help existing Alzheimer's disease. 2,000 iu a day is high enough to cause some people bleeding problems I've heard.

Also, alpha tocopherol, the part labeled vitamin E, is only a part of the related compounds. In addition, the cheaper versions of "vitamin E" are not the same as the natural version. Natural alpha tocoperol and beta, delta,& gamma tocopherol exist as do alpha, beta, delta, and gamma tocotrienol.

For prevention taking a vitamin E of 200 iu of natural alpha tocopherol taken from a source that also provides some natural beta, delta,& gamma tocopherol makes sense. Solgar makes one that I take. But there may be other companies that do so.

To get all of the E complex for prevention, the best way is to eat natural health OK fats and oils such as extra virgin olive oil, raw nuts if you aren't allergic, avodados, and guacamole.

Also taking 4,000 to 10,000 iu a day of vitamin D3 and getting turmeric in curried foods and perhaps taking curcumin supplements based on turmeric each help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

So does doing regular exercise and learning new things which add new brain cells and connections.

Surprisingly, socializing often provides heavy duty activation and exercise for your brain also.

Your brain is like the internet, the more locations and the more interconnections it has, the more damage any given part can sustain without preventing it from working.

And, adding new cells and interconnections also helps replace any that have been damaged.

The main cause of Alzheimer's disease is an oxidant called peroxynitrites. Peroxynitrites damage g protein-coupled receptors involved in short-term memory (muscarinic acetylcholine), mood (serotonin), sleep (melatonin), alertness (dopamine), and smell (olfactory), and nitrate tau proteins resulting in poor neurotransmission. Phenolic compounds in various fruits, vegetables, spices, essential oils, and olive oil, and Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit the formation of peroxynitrites. Phenolic compounds also scavenge peroxynitrites, inhibit tau nitration, and paritally reverse the oxidation of g protein-coupled receptors. They thus not only delay the onset of the disease, they can be used to improve cognitive function as shown by numerous animal studies (utilizing rosmarinic acid, grape seed extract, cinnamon extract, Ocimum sanctum--holy basil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil, and Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil just to name a few), case studies, and clinical trials (Jimbo and colleagues used aromatherapy with rosemary, lemon, orange, and lavender essential oils and Akhondzadeh and colleagues used tinctures of sage and lemon balm essential oils to effectively treat Alzheimer's disease). The resistance to this method to treat Alzheimer's disease is great, but it is most likely the most effective way to treat the disease right now.

This last comment is interesting. It goes well beyond my knowledge of the subject. But it may be correct as stated although there may be other causes.

The two things I like is that this comment does match what I do know about the subject. And, though I'm not familiar with the treatments suggested, they may be worth considering.

"The main cause of Alzheimer's disease is an oxidant called peroxynitrites. Peroxynitrites damage g protein-coupled receptors involved in short-term memory (muscarinic acetylcholine), mood (serotonin), sleep (melatonin), alertness (dopamine), and smell (olfactory), and nitrate tau proteins resulting in poor neurotransmission.

(Tau proteins are implicated in at least one cause of Alzheimer's disease and it does shut down short term memory and tend to damage the sense of smell.

I wonder if "peroxynitrites" are the substance in cured meats that cause other health problems because these meats often contain nitrites. If true, that may mean that regular bacon, ham, hot dogs, and the like, can help cause Alzheimer's disease if you eat them too often. Note that the food itself may be safe in some cases. Whole Foods sells a nitrite free bacon for example.)

"Phenolic compounds in various fruits, vegetables, spices, essential oils, and olive oil, and Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit the formation of peroxynitrites. Phenolic compounds also scavenge peroxynitrites, inhibit tau nitration, and paritally reverse the oxidation of g protein-coupled receptors."

Interesting as this suggests other foods besides extra virgin olive oil may help.

Also, the fact that peroxynitrites are an oxidant may mean that larger amounts of vitamin C, the natural form of vitamin E, alpha tocoperol, and alpha lipoic acid when taken together also might help prevent damage from peroxynitrites also.)

I am not doubting you but there have been lots of claims for help for alzheimers. the one I knew was coffee, drink lots of it.

Coffee helps improve your mental performance. And, drinking coffee has indeed been studies showing it helps prevent Alzheimer's disease and type 2 diabetes if you drink two or more cups a day of itl

There is no doubt that high omega 6 oils from eating soy and corn and canola oils and eating grains and eating animal fats from animals fed grains instead of their natural diets causes inflammation which then causes cancers, Alzheimer's disease and heart disease.

So, using mostly extra virgin olive oil instead of these high omega 6 oils clearly helps prevent those diseases.

This study showing that this compound in extra virgin olive oil is protective too was very nice to know because it adds to the protective effect of the olive oil!
